Museum Hill
Bed&Breakfast has a fascinating History
On a hill overlooking downtown
St. Joseph, Missouri, the original three-story 1880s Italianate
Mansion was built for a prominent grocer named George Kennard. In
1910, the house was purchased by Ernest E. Chase, owner of the Chase
Candy Company who "invented" the famous "Cherry
Mash" candy bar. In the same year, Mr. Chase commissioned the
construction of a grand addition to the south end of the home. Two of
our guest rooms are located in this 1910 addition.
You can read about us inside
This Old House, October 2002 edition.

Twice, the house was spotlighted
in "This Old House" magazine in its "save this old
house" section, in 1995 and in 2002, and in the Missouri Life Magazine.
A fire in the Fall of 1995 had
ripped the roof off the third story and caused extensive damage
throughout the home. The house was condemned, and what then seemed a
remains doomed to the wrecking ball was viewed as having "lots
of potential" to John Wood. His newly-wed bride, Karen,
reluctantly agreed to the purchase, and together they began the
nearly six-year journey of restoration. John's handyman skills, many
helping hands and a lot of prayers brought about this renovation
achievement - a tribute to John and Karen's visionary determination
and commitment. From Mansion to condemned and restored to a Mansion again.
